Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease (MSMD) is characterized by a selective predisposition to clinical disease caused by the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine and environmental mycobacteria. The known genetic etiologies of MSMD are inborn errors of IFN-γ immunity due to mutations of 15 genes controlling the production of or response to IFN-γ. Since the first MSMD-causing mutations were reported in 1996, biallelic mutations in the genes encoding IFN-γ receptor 1 (IFN-γR1) and IFN-γR2 have been reported in many patients of diverse ancestries.

Recombinant Growth hormone (rGH) therapy is approved in many countries for treatment of short stature in a number of childhood diagnoses. Despite the increasing body of international literature on rGH use, there is paucity of data on rGH use in Kuwait and the broader Middle-East which share unique ethnic and socio-cultural backgrounds. This study aimed to describe the pattern of use and treatment outcomes of rGH therapy in Kuwait.

An increasing proportion of women are infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) during pregnancy. Intrauterine viral infections induce an increase in the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, which inhibit the proliferation of neuronal precursor cells and stimulate oligodendrocyte cell death, leading to abnormal neurodevelopment. Whether a maternal cytokine storm can affect neonatal brain development is unclear. The objective of the present study was to assess neurodevelopmental outcomes in neonates born to mothers with SARS-CoV-2 infections during pregnancy.

Deficiency of dedicator of cytokinesis 8 (DOCK8) is a newly described combined primary immunodeficiency disease. It was found to account for 15% of combined immune deficiency cases in the National Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders Registry in Kuwait, a country with high prevalence of consanguinity.

To date, central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) are the most common healthcare-associated infections in high-risk neonates and children. These infections are associated with significantly longer hospital stays, increased health care cost, and mortality in the health care systems. Application of evidence-based preventive interventions has proven to decrease CLABSI rate. The purpose of this study is to reduce the undesired relative high CLABSI rate through the adoption of standardized quali

Early Childhood Caries (ECC) is a highly prevalent disease in Kuwait. It poses health, economic, and social implications affecting patients, their families and communities. ECC awareness campaigns targeting expectant mothers hold a promising potential as primary prevention tools. Understanding the baseline of ECC knowledge (ECC-K) is an important foundational step in planning such interventions. The aim of this study was to assess the level of ECC-K in a sample of expectant mothers, and to identify the sociodemographic and behavioural determinants of that knowledge.

The aim of this study was to determine the bacterial profile and prevalence of antibiotic resistance patterns of uropathogens, as well as to evaluate the problem with extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs)-producing isolates, causing urinary tract infections (UTIs) in children in Al-Amiri Hospital, Kuwait, over a 5-year period.

Between 1978 and 1988 congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) was diagnosed in 60 children in Kuwait with an estimated prevalence of 1:9,000 livebirths, which is higher than that reported from Europe and Canada. In addition, there was presumptive evidence of CAH resulting in the death of 20 other children, giving a prevalence figure of 1:7000.

The effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant women and newborns is incompletely understood. Preliminary data shows a rather fluctuating course of the disease from asymptomatic or mild symptoms to maternal death. However, it is not clear whether the disease increases the risk of pregnancy-related complications. The aim of the study is to describe the maternal and neonatal clinical characteristics and outcome of pregnancies with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
