Invasive aspergillosis due to triazole-resistant Aspergillus fumigatus, a common airborne fungal pathogen, has emerged in some European and Asian countries, likely due to exposure to azole fungicides in the environment. This study determined the occurrence of triazole-resistant A. fumigatus in outdoor and hospital environment in Kuwait, a semi-arid desert country in Arabian Peninsula.

Salmonella enterica serotype typhi continues to be an important public health problem in Kuwait. Analysis of the isolates from 163 patients, collected between 1995 and 2003, showed that the majority were from patients from the Indian sub-continent, including 45 from Bangladesh, 38 from India and 30 from Pakistan.

Escherichia coli O25b-B2-ST131 are considered virulent extra-intestinal pathogens causing serious clinical complications such as urinary tract infection and bacteraemia. Our main objectives in this study were to characterise the multi-drug resistant (MDR) isolates of this lineage in Kuwait, and to demonstrate whether reduced susceptibility is spread clonally.

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) have become one of the most challenging problems in infectious diseases worldwide. Unrecognised personnel such as food handlers (FHs) colonised with CRE serve as a reservoir for transmission. This study assessed the prevalence and susceptibility patterns of CRE isolates from FHs working in commercial eateries in the community (CFHs) and healthcare settings (HCFHs) in Kuwait over the period 2016-2018.

Among non-albicans Candida species, Candida glabrata is the leading cause of invasive infections in critically ill patients. It is intrinsically less susceptible to fluconazole/other azoles that limits therapeutic options. This study determined distribution of C. glabrata in clinical specimens and determined their susceptibility to fluconazole, caspofungin, and amphotericin B by E test. During 8-year period (2011-2018), 1,410 isolates were obtained from 1,410 patients including 600, 409, and 131 isolates from respiratory, urine, and bloodstream specimens, respectively. Proportion of C. glabrata isolates was nearly the same during the two 4-year periods.
