Critically ill children are at high risk for developing nosocomial infections that contributes to death in 4% of all pediatric intensive care unit admissions. This prospective study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of septicemia in the pediatric surgery department of a large tertiary care teaching hospital in Kuwait and to evaluate the risk factors, the microbial etiology, and the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of the isolated microorganisms.

Little is known on the impact of the pattern and extent of pneumatization of the sphenoid sinus (SS) on the dimensions of the surgical windows used in extended endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approaches. We therefore investigated whether the distances between the 2 optic canals and between the paired paraclival carotid arteries are influenced by the pattern and extent of pneumatization of the SS.

Out of 1415 patients treated as inpatients at Al-Babtain Center for Burns and Plastic Surgery, Ibn Sina Hospital, Kuwait spanning over a period of 6 years from June 1992 to June 1998, 102 developed clinically and microbiologically proven septicaemia. Only 15 out of them had either single or multiple episodes of septicaemia due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa and were studied during their stay in the hospital.

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical characteristics, histological type, stage at diagnosis, treatment and survival of young (< or = 45 years) and older patients with bronchogenic carcinoma. The study was designed as a retrospective review of all lung cancer patients referred to the Kuwait Cancer Control Center over a 10-year period from 1985 to 1994. The study comprised 590 patients with primary bronchogenic carcinoma, of whom 72 (12%) were < or = 45 years of age at the time of diagnosis.

Candida auris is an emerging, potentially multidrug-resistant pathogen that exhibits clade-specific resistance to fluconazole and also develops resistance to echinocandins and amphotericin B easily. This study analysed 49 C auris isolates for alterations in hotspot-1 and hotspot-2 of FKS1 for the detection of mutations conferring reduced susceptibility to echinocandins.

There are few studies that examine, prospectively, the epidemiological profile of glomerulopathy (GP) and its clinicopathological correlation. All patients referred to Al-Amiri renal center in Kuwait from January 1st, 1995 to December 31st, 2001 were screened for GP. Detailed clinical data were collected and serological markers were done.

Laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (LDN) has been adopted rapidly as it offers less postoperative pain, early recovery, and better cosmetic results compared with the open approach. This prospective study investigated the results of the first 80 LDN performed between May 2005 and May 2006, with regard to donor morbidity and effect on graft function.
